    [02] UN - CYPRUS

UN Secretary-Generals Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller believes there is a "good mood" concerning efforts to bring about a Cyprus settlement, as the Ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council hope for a meeting between the leaders of the two communities as soon as possible.

In statements after a reception hosted for diplomats by Cyprus President Demetris Christofias at the Presidential Palace, on the occasion of his investiture, Moler said that he had already met Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and will meet on Monday Christofias with a view to arrange for Mr. Talat and Mr. Christofias to get together as soon as possible.

Moller said that he cannot announce a date for the meeting between the two leaders and expressed hope that he will be able to come up with something more concrete, after his meeting with the President.

Furthermore, British High Commissioner to Cyprus Peter Millett said ``the sooner we can get the two leaders meeting face to face the better``.

``I hope that can happen very soon, he concluded.

    [03] CHRISTOFIAS - TALAT

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias has called for less public statements on either side in Cyprus, if serious work is to be done towards a negotiated settlement that would reunite the country, divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

If we really want to work seriously for a political settlement, then we must avoid public statements. This is my message to Mr. Talat, Christofias said, commenting on a letter sent by the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.

Christofias added that he had elaborated on the parameters of the settlement to be pursued before the House of Representatives and added: I expect understanding from the other side.

The Presidents remarks come in the wake of many public statements by Talat about efforts towards a settlement.

Christofias was speaking to the press shortly after he assumed office on Thursday, following his election victory last Sunday, from his predecessor Tassos Papadopoulos.
