  • [01] CHIEF RETURNING OFFICER - PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS - CANDIDACIES

Chief Returning Officer Lazaros Savvides has announced that after the submission of the candidacies for the election of the President of the Republic of Cyprus in February 2008 and the expiring of the grace period all candidacies submitted are valid and final.

Savvides said that in view of this, presidential elections will take place on February 17, 2008 and the printing of the ballots is already underway.

The names of the candidates, according to the legislation, will be in the following horizontal order, in a separate numbered column:

    1. Kasoulides Ioannis

    2. Christofias Demetris

    3. Papadopoulos Tassos

    4. Efstratiou Andreas

    5. Themistocleous Costas

    6. Kyriakos (Outopos) Costas

    7. Matsakis Marios

    8. Michael Anastasis

    9. Neophytou Christodoulos

The photographs and emblems which the candidates have submitted will also be depicted on the ballots.

    [02] BARROSO CYPRUS

President of the European Commission Joze Manuel Barosso expressed hope that 2008 would give the parties in Cyprus an opportunity to address the Cyprus problem ``with a real spirit of compromise,`` noting that the EU would do everything in its power to assist efforts to bring about a solution to the Cyprus problem.

Barosso, in a brief visit to Cyprus to attend the celebrations to mark the islands` entry to the euro area, was received by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Replying to questions after the meeting, Barosso described the Green Line dividing Nicosia, Cyprus` capital, as an ``absurd situation.``

Barosso congratulated Cyprus on adopting the euro and because it ``lived up its aspirations and its commitments".
