[01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - TURKEY - CYPRUS QUESTIONThe policy of the Turkish side - Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot leadership - does not aim at reunifying Cyprus, but at upgrading the regime in Cyprus occupied areas into that of a separate legal entity, short of diplomatic recognition a separate state within a state, Cyprus President said, adding that this is a core obstacle in the process for finding a solution to the Cyprus problem and this is an outcome to which we will never concur.Papadopoulos who received during separate formal ceremonies the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Mexico, Nepal and Ukraine and of the High Commissioner of New Zealand to Cyprus, said that Turkeys continuing intransigence, and denial to fulfill its commitments vis-a-vis the European Union and Cyprus, offers no ground for optimism. So far our generous attitude towards Turkeys accession to the European Union is met with a blockade against Cyprus in its bid to join several international and regional organisations and mechanisms, a refusal to open Turkeys ports and airports to Cypriot vessels, as required under the `Ankara Protocol` which Turkey had agreed to implement since 2004, and a refusal to take any steps to normalize its relations with Cyprus, he added. [02] KUWAIT - CYPRUS QUESTIONEmir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah IV Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah assured Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis that his country will continue to give its support to the efforts of the Cyprus government to reunite Cyprus and its people.An official press release said the Emir of Kuwait, who met with Marcoullis who is paying an official visit to Kuwait, thanked Cyprus and its people for their long-standing support to the affairs concerning the Arab world and wished that there will soon be significant progress in the relations between the two countries. Al Sabah asked from Marcoullis to convey to Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos an open invitation to visit Kuwait and his warm regards and appreciation. On her part, Marcoullis thanked the Emir for the help Kuwait gave to Cyprus just after the Turkish invasion of 1974 and briefed him on the current phase of the Cyprus question. [03] COMMISSION - CYPRUS - MALTA - EUROThe active phase of the euro changeover is now nearly finished in Cyprus and Malta, the European Commission has said adding that by the evening of 12 January, nine out of ten citizens in both countries were carrying only or mostly euro cash in their wallets and purses.A press release issued by the Commission said that ``thanks to intensive and systematic preparations and to the active and enthusiastic participation of citizens, the euro has been introduced quickly but smoothly into the daily life of the Cypriot and Maltese populations and the former currencies have now nearly vanished from wallets.`` It added that drawing the lessons of the 2002, 2007 and 2008 changeovers, the Commission has adopted a new recommendation on the organisation of future euro changeovers. Two weeks after the beginning of the operation, around 90% of the cash payments in shops in both Cyprus and Malta are now in euro. Retailers in Malta gave change exclusively in euro in all cash transactions requiring change and nearly all of them did so in Cyprus (99%), the Commission noted. [04] HOUSE PRESIDENT - CYPRUS QUESTION - FOREIGN COUNTRIESCyprus House President Demetris Christofias noted the role of foreign countries, including Turkey - with its expansionist policy and divisive goals and actions - as the main factor which affects in a negative way efforts to reach a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus question.Speaking during a meeting he had here with the new Ambassador ïf Cuba to Cyprus Fidel Emilio Vascos Gonzalez, Christofias elaborated on the Cyprus question, underlining the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to a settlement of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation on the basis of the UN relevant resolutions and the international and European law, denouncing the efforts of the Turkish side to upgrade and achieve recognition of the Turkish Cypriot puppet regime in the framework of the promotion of a settlement of two states and under the pretext of lifting the so called isolation of Turkish Cypriots.
