Asked if the government would be making representations to Syria regarding the issue of illegal immigrants arriving at the Turkish occupied port of Famagusta on ships sailing from Latakia in Syria, President Papadopoulos said his special envoy Vassos Lyssarides and Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Marcoullis had both visited Syria and met with the Syrian President.``The assurance we received is there. We expect its implementation but, apart from diplomatic representations, I hope it becomes clear to everyone that we will not allow this illegal act to tarnish our ties with Syria, which on many issues continues to support us,`` he said in statements at Larnaca airport on his way to Lisbon. President Papadopoulos noted that he was not aware of anyone ``suggesting aggressive measures against Syria for something that bothers us very much, something which is illegal and is accepted to be an illegal act and a non friendly act towards Cyprus.`` ``Of course we must insist that Syria should find a way to end this illegal action,`` the President pointed out. Asked about the arrival of illegal immigrants, who disembark in Famagusta having traveled from Latakia, President Papadopoulos said ``this is a very serious problem,`` adding however that it was not new. ``Very soon after the Turkish invasion and occupation, illegal immigration was an organised effort by the Turkish side,`` he explained, adding that Cyprus is a legitimate, official state, a member of the European Union and ``there are rules that govern the handling of asylum seekers.`` [03] CYPRIOT PAINTER - RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTSCypriot painter Andreas Charalambous has been declared an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts.
