  • [01] CYPRIOT PARTIES - NEGOTIATIONS

Leaders and representatives of political parties in Cyprus have expressed their views on a UN-brokered agreement, in July last year, to help resume negotiations and their readiness ``to help negotiations to start.`` Reading a joint communique to the press, Ambassador of the Slovak Embassy in Cyprus, Anna Turenicova, said ``the leaders and representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties met today for their regular meeting in Ledra Palace.``

As the Ambassador told journalists, they expressed their opinions on the issue of the 8th of July agreement and their readiness ``to help negotiations to start.`` ``The leaders and the representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties,`` as Mrs Turenicova said, ``call upon UN Secretary General to encourage their leaders of the two communities to take action in order to implement the 8th of July agreement with the aim of reaching a final comprehensive settlement as soon as possible.``

``The next regular meeting of the leaders and the representatives of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties,`` the Ambassador said, ``will be held on the 16th of January 2008, at 10:30, at the Ledra Palace.``

    [02] PAPADOPOULOS - SYRIA - ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos has said that the Republic of Cyprus would not allow the illegal arrival of immigrants on ships sailing the Latakia-Famagusta route to mar its relations with Syria, which has supported Cyprus on various occasions. Asked if the government would be making representations to Syria regarding the issue of illegal immigrants arriving at the Turkish occupied port of Famagusta on ships sailing from Latakia in Syria, President Papadopoulos said his special envoy Vassos Lyssarides and Minister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Marcoullis had both visited Syria and met with the Syrian President.

``The assurance we received is there. We expect its implementation but, apart from diplomatic representations, I hope it becomes clear to everyone that we will not allow this illegal act to tarnish our ties with Syria, which on many issues continues to support us,`` he said in statements at Larnaca airport on his way to Lisbon. President Papadopoulos noted that he was not aware of anyone ``suggesting aggressive measures against Syria for something that bothers us very much, something which is illegal and is accepted to be an illegal act and a non friendly act towards Cyprus.``

``Of course we must insist that Syria should find a way to end this illegal action,`` the President pointed out. Asked about the arrival of illegal immigrants, who disembark in Famagusta having traveled from Latakia, President Papadopoulos said ``this is a very serious problem,`` adding however that it was not new. ``Very soon after the Turkish invasion and occupation, illegal immigration was an organised effort by the Turkish side,`` he explained, adding that Cyprus is a legitimate, official state, a member of the European Union and ``there are rules that govern the handling of asylum seekers.``

[03] CYPRIOT PAINTER - RUSSIAN ACADEMY OF ARTS

Cypriot painter Andreas Charalambous has been declared an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts. A press release, issued by the Cyprus Union of Jouranlists, says the official ceremony to declare Charalambous honorary member of the Academy took place on November 27, 2007, in Moscow.

Speaking during the ceremony, Vice President of the Academy Dmitri Shvidkovski noted Charalambous very close relation with Russia, adding that the Cypriot artist graduated from the Sourikof Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow and later on many of his students, following his steps, also studied at this Academy.

Shvidkovski praised Charalambous work noting that the artist had many individual exhibitions and participated in many other collective exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. Samples of his work are exhibited in many different countries or are included in individual collections. Charalambous has in the past been invited to give lectures in Pratt Institute of New York. He is also well known for his work in theatre as stage and theatre costume designer for more than 25 plays.
