  • [01] PRESIDENT - GREECE

    Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos is in Athens for a working visit, during which he will have contacts with the Greek political leadership.

    On Monday evening President Papadopoulos and President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias will attend an event in honour of Kyriakos Matsis, who was killed in the 1955-59 EOKA struggle against British colonial rule.

    On Tuesday President Papadopoulos will hold consecutive meetings with President of the Hellenic Parliament Demetrios Sioufas, Papoulias and Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis. In the evening he will meet the leaders of Greek political parties.

    On Wednesday, he will visit Artemida community in Zacharo Municipality of Helia District in Greece, which the Cypriot government has undertaken to rebuild after the village suffered extensive damage during summer fires and lost 14 of its 100 inhabitants to the flames.

    Later on in the day, he will meet the leadership of the federation of Cypriots living in Greece.

    President Papadopoulos returns to Cyprus on Thursday.

    In statements, Artemida president George Kossyfas expressed gratitude to Cyprus for undertaking to rebuild the village and grief for the tragic loss of the 14 inhabitants.

    ``We, who stayed behind, will have to get back into our rhythm, but we cannot bring back the children we have lost,`` Kossyfas has told CNA, and said it was positive that Cyprus would be rebuilding the village faster than Greece could.

    Kossyfas noted that a 25-member delegation would be visiting the village on Monday to inform the local authorities on the details of rebuilding the community, and that work would begin in January.

    [02] NAVY - CYPRUS

    Chief of the French Mediterranean Navy Vice Admiral Jean Tandonet arrives in Cyprus on November 28 for a three-day official visit.

    According to Cyprus` Ministry of Defence, Vice Admiral Tandonet will meet on November 29 the Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Alexandros Zenon and the Ministry of Defence Petros Kareklas.

    After the meetings, an official welcoming will be held at the headquarters of the General Staff, followed by a meeting with Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Constantinos Bisbikas.

    The Vice Admiral will also visit National Guard units and sites of tourist and historical interest.

    [03] CHOGM 2007 - JOINT COMMUNIQUE - CYPRUS PROBLEM

    The Commonwealth Heads of Government stressed the need here Sunday for the implementation of the July 8th July Agreement without delay and without preconditions.

    In their paragraph on Cyprus which is included in the joint communique approved on Sunday, last day of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Kampala, Uganda, the heads of government also agreed on the importance of supporting the efforts of the UN Secretary General to bring about a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem in line with relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

    Furthermore, they expressed their support for a lasting, just and functional settlement based on the principles of the United Nations Charter, the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the principles of the Commonwealth.
