The 18th Radiomarathon, a two-day annual fund-raising charity event, began on Monday morning in aid of children with special needs, organised by the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and Marfin Popular Bank. A total of 52 kiosks opened at 06:00 local time and will be gathering donations until midnight on Tuesday, while 12 piggy-bank cars are on tour to collect money. The programme also includes eight marches, as well as sports and other events.

In a message to the people, President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos called on everyone to donate money to the Radiomarathon, noting that this year`s slogan ``Only love can`` expresses the meaning of the celebration of humanitarianism and the participation of everyone in the fund-raising efforts. ``I have great appreciation for the people of Cyprus and I feel proud of their feelings of social solidarity and cohesion,`` the President said, adding that ``voluntary contributions are neither a replacement of the role of the government nor a shift of government responsibilities to the shoulders of the volunteer.``

``I appeal to all of you and call on you, with your personal contribution, to participate in this event,`` in order to ease the suffering and agony of the people with special needs, President Papadopoulos concluded. In 2006, the Radiomarathon raised a total of 1,750,000 Cyprus pounds, the equivalent of approximately 2,992,500 euro.
