[01] PRESIDENT - JULY AGREEMENT - PROPOSALSPresident Tassos Papadopoulos said on Friday in Lisbon that the proposals he has submitted to the UN Secretary General clearly aim at promoting a UN-brokered agreement, reached with the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community in July last year.He also said that what Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has conveyed to the UN Secretary General is just Confidence Building Measures (CBM), which, as he pointed out, even though they are important to help improve the climate within which talks are held, they do not address the substance of the issue, that is substantive talks for a Cyprus settlement. ``If our proposals to promote the Gambari process have no significance according to Talat, one could suggest that Talats proposals for CBM only are even less significant, Papadopoulos added, invited to comment on statements by Talat who dismissed his proposals to the UN. ``We have submitted our proposals to the UN, according to a UN request. My understanding is that Mr. Talat has conveyed to the Secretary General proposals on Confidence Building Measures only, which even though they are significant to help improve the climate within which talks are held, they do not address the substance of the issue, that is substantive talks for a Cyprus settlement,` ` he stressed. Replying to questions, he said he has called on the UN to undertake an initiative for the practical promotion of the Gambari agreement. [02] CYPRUS - REFORM TREATYPresident Tassos Papadopoulos has described as very important step the agreement of European Union leaders on the new reform Treaty, clinched during the Intergovernmental Conference.In statements to the press, Papadopoulos expressed hope that Cyprus will be among the first EU countries to ratify the new Treaty, after its signing in Lisbon on December 13. ``The conclusion of the reform Treaty constitutes a new chapter on the development of the EU. It aims at making the EU more effective with greater cooperation among member states, especially as regards its institutions. I believe that the general will of all members is that all parliaments should ratify the Treaty the soonest possible,`` he added. [03] CYPRUS - FISHERY MEETINGCyprus will be hosting the 10th session of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean, from October 22 to 26.Cypriot Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and the Environment Photis Photiou will open the meeting, which is organised by Cyprus` Department of Fisheries and Marine Research. According to an official press release, the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is the established scientific body to provide views and advice on issues referred to it by the General Fisheries Commission of the Mediterranean (GFCM). [04] AMATHUS PALACE - EXCAVATIONSA large area of 12.5 x 5 m (areas 15 to 18, from north to south) was opened by the French Archaeological Mission at the Amathus Palace in the immediate vicinity of the area investigated in 2004, in order to determine how many rooms extended to the west.According to the Department of Antiquities, three narrow rooms were already known in this sector and the extension was expected to include at least two rooms of the same supposed width. Since the campaigns 2004 and 2006 have been devoted to the localisation of the Eastern extension of the storerooms of the palace, the aim of this campaign was to discover the western limits of the complex.
