[01] PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONSThe first round of the presidential elections will be held on 17 February 2008, followed by a second round on 24 February 2008 if no candidate secures 50% plus one vote in the first round.Minister of the Interior Christos Patsalides said during a press conference on Thursday that on 4 January 2008 the Minister will be issuing the decree proclaiming the elections and the Chief Returning Officer and other officers will be appointed. On 11 January 2008 the Chief Returning Officer will announce the date and place for submitting candidacies, and probably on 18 January the candidacies will be submitted, followed on 8 February by the notification regarding the polling stations. Patsalides said the main priority of the Ministry was for all new voters to register, noting that there were about 27,000 persons aged between 18 and 30 who were not registered and who would be called to do so. Head of the Election Department at the Ministry of the Interior Demetris Demetriou said there were nearly 500,000 registered voters and that the number would rise to about 520,000 with the registration of the new voters. [02] EU - TURKISH CYPRIOTS - WATERThe European Commission announced the beginning of a project to replace water pipes and domestic water meters in the Turkish occupied part of Nicosia.A press release by the European Commission says that the EU will fund the replacement of water pipes and domestic water meters in the northern part of Nicosia, adding that this is the first work project to be financed from the EU aid programme for the Turkish Cypriot community. The project foresees replacement of the main pipes over a length of 83 kms as well as the replacement of house connections and 3,800 domestic water meters. [03] ARCHBISHOP - GEORGIAArchbishop of the Church of Cyprus Chrysostomos II has left for Georgia at the invitation of Patriarch Elias, to participate in the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of the Patriarch`s assumption of duties and the 1,400 years since the establishment of the ancient monastery of the Holy Cross.The Archbishop, who is accompanied by Paphos Bishop Georgios, will also meet with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, with whom he will discuss issues concerning the Church and Orthodoxy. [04] CYPRUS RALLYCyprus Rally, FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) sixth round begins on Friday with 51 foreign and Cypriot crews making final preparations.The Cyprus Rally, a candidate for a spot in the 2008 World Rally Championship calendar, is the second MERC event to be hosted by Cyprus after the Troodos Rally organised last April. The Troodos Rally, round 3 of this years MERC, was held in Cyprus back in April and ended with a clear victory for Qatars Nasser Al-Attiyah the defending FIA Middle East and PWRC Champion and co-driver Chris Patterson. Once again based in Limassol, the islands largest costal resort, the rally promises the many motorsport fans flocking to Cyprus a weekend packed full of action and excitement.
