  • [01] US - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The United States along with the rest of the international community would like to see a permanent resolution of the long-running disputes in Cyprus, State Department Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey said during his daily briefing when asked about the meeting on Wednesday between Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

Casey added that we`re supportive of UN efforts to engage on that issue and we`ll look forward to seeing what, if any, conclusions come out of these meetings.

Certainly, we are always pleased to see contacts among these individuals. The United States along with the rest of the international community would like to see a permanent resolution of the long-running disputes in Cyprus, he noted.

President Papadopoulos and Talat met on Wednesday in the presence of the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative to Cyprus Michael Moller, with a view to promote efforts for a Cyprus settlement.

According to a press release issued after their meeting, the two leaders agreed on the need for the earliest start of the process and discussed other issues leading to a comprehensive settlement.``

    [02] ECHR - TURKISH CYPRIOTS

Turkish Cypriots Ali Erel and Mustafa Damdelen submitted on September 3rd an application to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Republic of Cyprus.

A press release issued by Turkish Cypriot Cyprus EU Association and signed by Erel and Damdelen said the applicants continue to seek to reactivate their constitutional rights providing for political representation in the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus. It added that their hope is that their application will contribute to the resolution of the deadlock in the Cyprus problem.

Erel and Damdelen, along with 76 other Turkish Cypriots, requested on 28 February 2006 by the Minister of Interior to be registered in a separate electoral roll for the parliamentary elections, a right guaranteed by the Constitution.

The Minister of Interior rejected this request and subsequently a judicial review was initiated before the Supreme Court. The latter dismissed their application on 30 April 2007, basing its judgment on the law of necessity.

    [03] CPC - NEW PRESIDENT

The Council of Ministers has appointed former Supreme Court Judge Panayiotis Kallis to the post of President of the Commission for the Protection of Competition, after the resignation of George Christophides.

Panayiotis Kallis was born on 9 April 1937. He studied Barrister at Law and served as District Judge from 1982 to 1988, Senior District Judge from 1988 to 1989 and District Court President from 1989 to 1995. Kallis also served as Administrative President of the Limassol and Nicosia District Courts from 1993 to 1995 and Judge of the Supreme Court from 1996 to 2005.

    [04] CYPRUS - ROMAN WRECK

A brief season of underwater diving survey along Cyprus` east coast, carried out by a small international team of archaeologists and students during late July and early August, brought to light an extensive wreck site dating to the early imperial Roman era, around the 1st century AD.

According to a press release, three weeks were spent at sheltered inlets and dangerous promontories in the area of Cape Greco and north towards Protaras area, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities, in an effort to determine the areas long-term maritime history in advance of eventually locating well-preserved shipwrecks.

A total of six stone and metal anchors recorded through the area, testify to a long history from antiquity through at least the mediaeval period of merchants stopping at the numerous natural and manmade ports that dot these shores.
