  • [01] ÍÁÔIONAL COUNCIL - 8 JULY AGREEMENT

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos informedmembers of the National Council on efforts to implement the process agreed on July 8, 2006, between him and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat.

A statement adopted unanimously by the National Council and read out to the press by Government Spokesman Vassilis Palmas, noted that Papadopoulos also expressed his assessments on the prospects of promoting the 8 July Agreement, to which the Greek Cypriot side remains committed and that the members of the National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the question of Cyprus, expressed their positions and views as regards the upcoming meeting between Papadopoulos and Talat.

Palmas said the meeting will take place on Wednesday afternoon at the residence of Michael Moller, Special Representative of UN Secretary General in Cyprus.

The July 2006 agreement, clinched under UN auspices between Papadopoulos and Talat, provides for discussions at technical committees and working groups on issues that affect the day to day life of the people and concurrently issues relating to the substance of the question of Cyprus. No such discussions have taken place yet, in spite of year-long meetings between top aides of the leaders of the two communities, who are meeting on Wednesday in a bid to make headway towards the implementation of the agreement.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory.

The National Council is composed of two members from all parliamentary parties. The main opposition party Democratic Rally (DISY) has suspended its participation to the Council, saying it did not function properly.

[02] FOREIGN MINISTER - EUROPEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD POLICY

The enhancement of the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) will establish a zone of increased security, stability and welfare between the EU and its neighbouring region, that will be based on the respect of human rights, the rule of law and the international law, Cyprus Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis said, addressing the first ever meeting of Ministers and other representatives from all of the countries covered by the ENP with their counterparts from the European Union.

Marcoullis congratulated Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner, for her initiative to organize this meeting under the title Working Together Strengthening the European Neighbourhood Policy``, which focused particularly on the opportunities for trade liberalisation, mobility, and the challenges of climate change and energy security.

[03] WORLD SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIPS - DOUBLE TRAP FINAL - RESULTS
