[01] FOREIGN MINISTER - EU MEETINGMinister of Foreign Affairs Erato Kozakou Markoullis departs on September 2 for Brussels to participate in a meeting on ``Strengthening the European Neighbourhood Policy``, to be held on September 3.The conference, organised by the European Commission, will examine ways to strengthen the European Neighbourhood Policy in the sectors of energy and good governance. It will be attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU member states, as well as their counterparts from the 16 partners in the Policy. On the sidelines of the meeting, Markoullis will hold a series of bilateral meetings with EU Ministers as well as those of the Policy partner states. [02] WORLD SHOOTING CHAMPIONSHIPS - CYPRUSA record-breaking 83 countries participate in the 2007 World Shooting Championships, which Cyprus is hosting between September 1-10, placing the island at the center of World Shooting. Cyprus, a country with a long and successful tradition in the sport of shooting, is also hosting the European Shooting Championships in July 2008. The World Championships take place at the Cyprus Olympic Shooting Centre in Nicosia. This is the third time Cyprus is hosting the ISSF World Shooting Federation, after 1995 and 2003.Cyprus Shooting Sport Federation Technical Director Petros Kyritsis has told CNA in an interview that a total of 83 countries with some 683 athletes and 250 technical staff will come to Cyprus, which is a new record for the standards of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). He explained that the Championships are the last to take place before the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, adding that all ISSF member countries will participate with a view to securing the five Olympic Games seats, out of thirty, which are yet to be allocated. Horst Schreiber, ISSF`s Secretary General has said he was surprised by the record-braking competition list. ``I didn`t expect such large participation,`` he has told a press conference, adding that ISSF is very pleased with this development. Luciano Rossi, one of ISSF`s Vice Presidents and President of Italian Shooting Sport Federation, pointed out that during the Championships ``Cyprus will be the capital of the world.`` During the ten days of the Championships, top athletes in world shooting will battle for the gold in the disciplines of Trap, Double Trap and Skeet. Cyprus will participate in the Championships with 22 athletes (15 male, 7 female) with high hopes, especially in the Skeet discipline.
