[01] SPOKESMAN - ILLEGAL REGIMEThe illegal Turkish Cypriot regime, in Turkish occupied Cyprus, is working to upgrade its status, as part of its designs, Government Spokesman Vasilis Palmas has said. He also said that as long as there is a stalemate in efforts to find a negotiated settlement, the risk of seeing the country divided exists.What we have before us is the position, not just an indication, that the Turkish Cypriot side is always trying to upgrade its status, Palmas said when asked if the Turkish Cypriot regime is seeking self-determination and independence. He explained that all indications from moves by the regime are that its permanent intention and disposition is to try and upgrade its status, something which could lead to such circumstances that might provide the wrong solution in Cyprus. Responding to questions, Palmas said there is always the danger of seeing Cyprus divided or following in Kosovos fate and as long as the solution is pending and there is a stalemate, we shall have to deal with such risks and we should be on our guard. Any objective observer understands and realises that all the moves made by the regime and the Turkish Cypriot leadership are in the direction of upgrading the status of the regime, he added. [02] OCCUPIED VILLAGES - RESOLUTIONThe Mayors of two Turkish occupied villages, in the northern Kyrenia district, have affirmed their commitment to continue their struggle against the Turkish occupation and reinforce efforts for the reunification of Cyprus, in conditions of real freedom and dignity. The Mayors of Lapithos and Karavas, Athos Eleftheriou and Yiannis Papaioannou respectively, met on Monday with President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos and House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, to whom they handed resolutions, asserting their positions.In the resolutions, the Mayors note that they ``condemn once again the coup d etat and the Turkish invasion that led to the occupation of 37% of the land of the Republic of Cyprus by the Turkish troops and our violent displacement from our homes and properties.`` Furthermore they expect President Papadopoulos to continue the struggle for a just, viable and functional settlement of the Cyprus problem, which will safeguard the right to return to their homes in a reunited Cyprus, with their human rights guaranteed. The Mayors call on Christofias to convey to parliaments abroad their determination to continue their struggle for a just, peaceful and viable settlement. They noted that a UN-brokered agreement in July last year is a very positive step in towards resuming substantive negotiations and express hope that the Turkish side will adopt the provisions of the agreement. The resolutions say ``we expect that Cyprus` accession to the European Union will contribute to the reunification of our country and the peaceful coexistence of Greek and Turkish Cypriots with the implementation of the acquis communautaire in all the area of Cyprus.`` ``We declare our determination to continue and reinforce the efforts for finding a just and long-lasting solution to the Cyprus problem, a solution that secures our right to return to our homes and properties in conditions of safety without the Turkish troops and settlers and guarantees our human rights and basic freedoms,`` the resolutions point out. They add that ``we declare that the rejection of the specific proposal of the Secretary General on the referendum of April 24th, 2004 by the Greek Cypriots did not constitute a position against a solution to the Cyprus problem. On the contrary, we consider that the people of Cyprus are entitled to a new opportunity for a just and final settlement of the Cyprus problem.`` [03] FAMAGUSTA MUNICIPALITY - ANTI-OCCUPATION DEMONSTRATIONThe Municipality of the occupied town of Famagusta organizes on August 4, an anti-occupation demonstration, on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary since the capture of the town by the Turkish troops.Speaking during a press conference, Famagusta Mayor Alexis Galanos said the demonstration will take place at Famagusta Cultural Centre in Dherynia village, bordering the buffer zone and called on all refugees, from Famagusta and other areas, to attend the demonstration.
