[01] CYPRUS - HEAT WAVECyprus is having another day of soaring temperatures, with 40 degrees Centigrade in the capital Nicosia and 31 degrees on higher ground.The situation is expected to remain the same in the coming days, according to the Meteorological Services, while humidity is also very high, something that causes problems to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and the very young or sick people. Temperatures on the coast range around from 32 to 34 degrees. During the night, low cloud will settle in and inland the temperature will drop to 24, only two degrees higher than mountainous areas. Warnings have been issued for people to avoid exposure in the mid-day sun, take plenty of water and restrict their movements to the absolute necessary. The Electricity Authority has appealed for restraint in the use of electricity power and electrical appliances that use up a lot of power, especially around noon when the demand for electricity is very high. The weather during the weekend will remain the same with increased humidity and no significant change in temperatures. [02] ANDREAS MAVROYIANNIS - UN GENERAL ASSEMBLYCyprus` Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis has been elected one of the 21 Vice Chairmen of the 62nd Session of the UN General Assembly, after hearings at the plenary of the UN General Assembly.In the current Session of the General Assembly, Mavroyiannis was one of the six members of the Contact Group appointed by the Chairman of the General Assembly to study the restructuring of the Security Council. The General Assembly has a wide range of important issues on its agenda, such as peace and security issues, including the Cyprus problem. Other issues relate to reforms at the Security Council and challenges, such as climate change, globalisation, terrorism, immigration and sustainable development. [03] GRAND IMAM OF EGYPT - CYPRUS ARCHBISHOPEgypts most senior Moslem cleric has said he would help his Christian counterpart from Cyprus to protect churches in the areas of the Republic occupied by Turkey since 1974. The Grand Imam of Egypt Mohamed Sayed Tantawi has promised Archbishop Chrysostomos II that he would support a call from the primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in Cyprus to help prevent further destruction of religious sites in the Turkish-occupied areas.According to the Archbishops press spokesman Andreas Demetriou, the pledge was given at a meeting in Cairo between the two, during which the Archbishop outlined the situation on the island, saying it remains divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion, and referred to attempts to afford recognition to the illegal Turkish Cypriot regime in occupied Cyprus. The Archbishop told the Grand Imam that more than 500 churches in occupied Cyprus need to be restored urgently, otherwise they will collapse and sought support from him to prevent this destruction. During the one-hour long meeting, Chrysostomos explained that the Church of Cyprus had always respected Moslem places of worship on the island. The Grand Imam said he would work for peace and love in Cyprus and promised to communicate the Archbishops concerns to everybody and to support his call with all his might.
