[01] SLOVAKIA - AMBASSADOR - CYPRUSThe new Ambassador of the Slovak Republic Anna Turenicova said on Tuesday that the peaceful dialogue and negotiations under the UN auspices and in conformity with the European Union principles can lead to a permanent, viable and just solution of the Cyprus problem.Presenting her credentials to President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos, Turenicova expressed hope that the good services offered to the political parties in Cyprus by the Slovak Embassy in Nicosia will contribute to resolving the Cyprus issue, and assured that she would continue the rapprochement activities. Receiving the credentials, President Papadopoulos assured that ``we continue to strive for the reunification of our country and we remain committed to a viable and functional settlement of the Cyprus problem,`` adding that ``we support a United Nations solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with a single sovereignty and international personality and a single citizenship and based on the principles on which the European Union is founded.`` [02] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS CANDIDACYPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos called on the people of the island to show him their ``trust and support, in order to secure together the course of Cyprus in the coming years,`` as he announced his candidacy for reelection in the February 2008 presidential elections.In a televised statement from the Presidential Palace to the people of Cyprus, President Papadopoulos said he was running for reelection in order to continue striving for a settlement of the Cyprus problem, and that his guarantee was his so far policy and stance. [03] CYPRUS - LEBANON - DONATIONCyprus donated Tuesday 20,000 US dollars to Lebanon with a view to promote the implementation of the UN Security Council 1701 resolution for the establishment of the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the neighbouring country.A cheque for this amount was handed over during a special ceremony here by Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Alexandros Zenon to the Ambassador of Lebanon to Cyprus Michel El Khoury, who thanked co-heartedly the Government and the people of Cyprus for their support and solidarity with the people of Lebanon. [04] EUROBAROMETER - CYPRUSThe vast majority of Cypriots in the areas under the control of the government of the Republic of Cyprus feel safer because Cyprus is a member of the European Union, with 72%, the highest percentage in the EU, according to the results of the Eurobarometer survey, conducted between 11 April and 7 May 2007.Among Turkish Cypriots, unemployment was listed as the most important issue facing the community, followed by the Cyprus problem.
