  • [01] NEW MINISTERS - PRESIDENTIAL PALACE - SWORN IN

The four new Ministers, appointed on Friday by Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos were sworn in, at a special ceremony at the Presidential Palace.

The four Ministers, appointed after the resignation of four members of the Cabinet in the wake of the dissolution of the tri-party coalition due to left-wing AKELs decision to run for the presidential elections with its own General Secretary Demetris Christofias as candidate, are Erato Kozakou Markoullis, who has been appointed as Minster of Foreign Affairs, Christos Patsalides who has been appointed as Minister of the Interior, Maria Malahtou Pamballi, who has been appointed as Minister of Communications and Works and Costas Kadis who has been appointed as Minister of Health.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Papadopoulos expressed certainty that the new Ministers who undertake their duties today will fully respond through their abilities, moral and conscientiousness to the serious responsibilities they undertake.

Replying on behalf of the new Ministers, the new Minister of Foreign Affairs said they were engaged in doing their utmost to fulfill the task assigned to them by President Papadopoulos, adding that our goal is the success of our mission through hard work, in the area of competence for each one of us, to fulfill the relevant commitments which the Government has undertaken before the people.

President Papadopoulos said he understood the difficulties the new Ministers will face under the current circumstances and assured them that they will have his own support and the support of the other members of the Cabinet.

Addressing the outgoing Ministers George Lillikas, Neoklis Silikiotis, Haris Thrasou and Haris Charalambous, President Papadopoulos expressed his sincere appreciation to them for the important work they have done as members of a collective body as the Council of Ministers is.

Addressing the new Ministers, President Papadopoulos underlined the responsibility and the duty they undertake as of today towards the state and the citizens.

Furthermore he noted that the new Ministers are engaged by the programme the government has undertaken to fulfill during its term in office, noting that most of this programme has been fulfilled.

Markoullis thanked on behalf of the new Ministers President Papadopoulos for appointing them at these high-ranking posts.

We feel great honour and we are deeply grateful because we are given the chance to serve our country from these important posts, she added.

Referring to the division of Cyprus, since the Turkish invasion of the island in 1974, Markoullli said that we are engaged in the struggle for the reunification of Cyprus and the termination of occupation, noting that the basis for the settlement of he problem must be the international law and the protection and implementation of human rights for all the citizens of the country, without any discriminations of gender, national origin, religion or language.

[02] PRESIDENT PAPADOPOULOS - ANTHROPOLOGICAL LABORATORY - VISIT

Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos has stressed that the issue of missing persons is not merely a question of exhumations and identification of remains, but it is primarily a matter of respect of the dignity of those missing and their next of kin.

The President was full of praise for all those who are dedicated to the arduous task of exhuming and identifying remains and paid special tribute to Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots who work in perfect harmony on such an emotional issue.

This, he pointed out, sends the message that the islands two communities can build a common future in a reunited Cyprus, which has been divided since the 1974 Turkish invasion.

The President pledged that the government will spare no effort and no expense to help conclude the process of exhumation and identification of remains, unearthed in the northern Turkish occupied areas as well as the southern government-controlled part of the island, believed to belong to Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots killed during the 1974 Turkish invasion and the inter-communal strike in the early 60s.

Papadopoulos remarks were made after a visit to the Anthropological Laboratory of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP), in the UN controlled area at the now defunct Nicosia airport, where he was briefed about the work carried out by forensic experts.

    [03] CÕPRIOTS - LONDON - DEMONSTRATE

The Cypriots in the United Kingdom demanded during a gathering in London, organised by the National Federation of Cypriots in the United Kingdom, that the British government takes initiatives to create the conditions that would lead to a settlement of the Cyprus problem.

The gathering in Trafalgar Square was held to mark the 33rd anniversary of the 1974 coup and Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and was supported by British MPs and MEPs.

In a letter handed in at 10, Downing Street by a delegation of the National Federation of Cypriots, President of the Federation Peter Droushiotis calls on the British government ``to act in the interest of justice and to increase all efforts towards delivering a united, independent, bizonal, bicommunal Cyprus, where the human rights of all Cypriots will be safeguarded.``

At the gathering, the MPs deplored Turkey`s stance, which is against international legality and EU principles, and expressed their determination to maintain their support towards Cyprus until a just solution is achieved.
