  • [01] CYPRUS - COUP ANNIVERSARY

Cyprus pays tribute Sunday to those who lost their lives in defending the Republic during the 1974 military coup against the democratically elected President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios.

The wailing of sirens was heard at 08:20 local time, the very time when the coup began, engineered by the military junta then ruling Greece.

The coup was followed five days later by the Turkish invasion, which resulted in the occupation of 37% of the Republic`s territory.

A church service for those killed during the coup, officiated by the primate of the church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos II, was held this morning at Panagia Evangelistria Church in Nicosia in the presence of President Tassos Papadopoulos, House of Representatives President Demetris Christofias, Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Demetris Rallis, leaders or representatives of political parties, other political and military officials and relatives of those killed.

Minister of Education and Culture Akis Kleanthous addressed the ceremony.

President Papadopoulos and other officials laid wreaths at the tombs of those killed defending the Republic, at Saints Constantinos and Eleni cemetery in Nicosia.
