    President Tassos Papadopoulos will seek re-election in next Februarys presidential elections in Cyprus.

    This was revealed by Yiannakis Omerou, leader of the Social Democrats EDEK party, after a meeting at the Presidential Palace that marked the end of the three-party government coalition.

    President Papadopoulos elected President of the Cyprus Republic in February 2003 with the votes of the left-wing AKEL party, centre-right Democratic Party and Social Democrats EDEK Party.

    The Democratic Party and EDEK have already announced their support to Papadopoulos while AKEL has proposed its General Secretary and current President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias as a candidate for the next presidential elections.

    Christofias failed to convince his government partners to run as a common candidate.

    The opposition righ-wing Democratic Rally Party supports the candidacy of Euro MP Ioannis Kasoulides, former Foreign Minister.

    [02] CY POUND LOCKS WITH EURO

    The Cyprus pound was locked on Tuesday with the euro, which will be worth 0.585274 pounds. The EU Ministers agreed that the two countries should adopt the currency as expected on 1 January 2008.

    The EU Ministers of Finance (ECOFIN) gave both Cyprus and Malta the go-ahead to adopt the European single currency at a meeting in Brussels, attended by Cypriot Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris.

    Portuguese Minister of Finance Fernando Teixeira dos Santos, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, congratulated the two countries ``for this achievement, which is the result of appropriate policies which have been conducted in the last years.``

    [03] CYPRUS DESTROYS ANTI-PERSONNEL MINES

    The Cyprus Republic has completed the destruction of all stockpiled anti-personnel mines in its possession, complying fully with the Ottawa Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction.

    A special ceremony was held at a Military Testing Range, outside the capital Nicosia, to mark the successful completion of the National Plan for the destruction of all stock-piled anti-personnel mines.

    The ceremony was attended by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defence, George Lillikas and Christodoulos Pashiardes, National Guard Commander, Lieutenant General Constantinos Bisbikas and heads of foreign diplomatic missions in Cyrpus.

    [04] TALAT ACCEPTS PAPADOPOULOS` PROPOSAL

    Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat has accepted an invitation from Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos to meet each other and discuss ways for a breakthrough in efforts for a solution to the long-standing Cyprus problem.

    Talat told a press conference that he accepted Papadopoulos invitation for a meeting, describing the proposal as a positive step and expressing the view that the meetings between the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities should take place periodically.
