  • [01] PRESIDENT - CYPRUS PROBLEM

The key to the political settlement in Cyprus lies in Ankara, President Tassos Papadopoulos stressed on Monday, adding that anybody who has seriously dealt with the question of Cyprus can ascertain this.

I do not think there are many people in Cyprus who do not recognise that Ankara was and still remains the key to a solution in Cyprus, the President said, responding to questions after he had signed the book of condolences at the embassy of Austria for the late Kurt Waldheim.

Anybody who has dealt with the question of Cyprus in a serious manner and who has studied the problem can ascertain this and see that there is tangible proof of this reality, he pointed out.

Asked how this can be overcome, President Papadopoulos replied that we believe that Ankara should become interested in solving the Cyprus problem, just as the Turkish Cypriots should.

It is known, however, that the Turkish Cypriots cannot decide on anything without Ankaras prior approval. We have had examples of this only recently and we have also experienced this in the past, he added.

    [02] CHRISTOFIAS - VACAROIU

President of the House of Representatives Demetris Christofias met on Monday with visiting President of the Romanian Senate Nicolae Vacaroiu and discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, parliamentary relations between Romania and Cyprus and the development of parliamentary diplomacy on a bilateral level, on the Europe scene and internationally.

Christofias said he was grateful to Romania, the Senate and Vacaroiu for their understanding concerning the Cyprus problem and its solution based on UN resolutions.

Vacaroiu pointed out the significance of the excellent relations between Cyprus and Romania, adding that a political dialogue was being held on all levels, which gives an important impetus to bilateral relations, resulting in an increased volume of commercial exchanges between the two countries.

    [03] DEFENCE MINISTER - ATHENS

Newly appointed Defence Minister Christodoulos Pashiardis arrived in Athens on Monday for an official visit.

On Tuesday, Pashiardis will visit the Greek National Defence Ministry and will meet his Greek counterpart Evangelos Meimarakis to discuss bilateral and European issues of interest.

    [04] BRITAIN - ORAMS CASE

Britain`s Court of Appeal, before which the hearing in Meletis Apostolides` appeal began on Monday, intends to refer certain points of the Orams case to the Court of Justice of the European Communities, which are substantive for the final outcome of the case.

Lord Phillips, Lord Chief Justice, advised from the beginning of the hearing the lawyers of the litigants that it would be difficult to dissuade the Court.

He called on the two parties to decide on the future procedure, that is to say if they agree with the position of the Court. If they agree, they should deliberate on the points to be referred and if they disagree, then a time-consuming procedure to dissuade the Court would follow.
