  • [01] HOUSE PRESIDENT - TURKEY - CYPRUS

House President and General Secretary of AKEL Demetris Christofias believes that dominance of the Turkish military in the countrys political scene cannot spell anything positive for Cyprus.

He also thinks that the current political situation in Turkey, whose troops occupy for the past 33 years Cyprus northern areas, renders efforts for a negotiated settlement even more difficult.

Christofias has called for a strong domestic front and urged once more the main opposition party, Democratic Rally, to regain its seat at the National Council, the top advisory body on the question of Cyprus to the President of the Republic.

Speaking at his party (AKEL) district congress in the southern coastal town of Limassol, Christofias said the situation in Turkey is fluid but it is also obvious that the Turkish military is fighting to maintain its dominant position in the political, social, cultural and economic life in the country.

I believe that should the military prevail in this tug of war between the prime minister and the armed forces, there will be nothing positive for Cyprus as this would harden Ankaras positions on Cyprus and reinforce those forces in the Turkish Cypriot community that support former community leader Rauf Denktash, (who continues to uphold the idea of creating two states on the island), Christofias pointed out.

The House President warned that should Turkish Premier Tayip Erdogan dominate the political scene, this does not necessarily mean a shift in Ankaras position.

The current situation makes attempts to find a political solution in Cyprus even more difficult and this is why we insist that we must have the widest possible solidarity on the home front and we call on DISY leadership to think again and return to Council meetings, he added.
