[01] FAMAGUSTA CAMPAIGNUnder the slogan Lets give voice to our city, the refugee Municipality of Famagusta began a campaign to collect signatures by Famagusta refugees demanding that they be allowed to return to the fenced off town.In a speech at the ceremony at the occupied towns Cultural Centre in Dherynia village, Mayor of Famagusta Alexis Galanos said that today we begin a campaign for the return of the town of Famagusta which is deserted and we refuse to become accustomed to this picture. We want Famagusta to reign once again. This great injustice violates UN resolutions and especially resolution 550 and high level agreements, Galanos said. He called on all people of Famagusta to come forward to sign to give the town the power to promote the issue everywhere and especially before Europe. Galanos said that before any more chapters in Turkeys EU accession open, the big chapter of the return to the city of Famagusta should open as well as the right for our refugees to return to their homes. In his address, Mayor of Athens Nikitas Kaklamanis who is in Cyprus for the Famagusta cause, conveyed the solidarity and support of the people of Athens who want to unite their power and voices with that of the people of Famagusta in the struggle to bring back life to the town of Famagusta. He assured that Athens will continue to play the role of the mediator at international fora, because we cannot tolerate any further delay from any side. Signatures will be collected from today and thereafter from 21 designated places across the island. Eligible to sign the Declaration are Famagusta citizens aged 12 and over. Refugees residing abroad are also able to sign online at www.ammochostos.org.cy. The campaign will end on 22 April 2007. Cyprus, which joined the EU in 2004, has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. [02] MATSAKIS LARNACA HOSPITALCypriot MEP Marios Matsakis, who was detained by the British Bases in Dhekelia since Thursday, was taken to Larnaca General Hospital for health reasons.Matsakis was transported to the hospital via a British Bases ambulance and was admitted to the ER for a check up. His partner and son as well as his fellow MEP Adamos Adamou arrived at the hospital. British Bases Spokesman Dennis Barns told CNA that Matsakis, who was on a hunger strike since he was taken to Dhekelia Prison two days ago following his arrest on Thursday at Akrotiri in the Sovereign Base Areas, had not taken any liquid whatsoever. Noting that the MEP was visited by medical people twice a day at the prison, he said Matsakis, is on medication and we are not what the medication is for, and he is been trying to chew his tablets without water so our medics were concerned that he wasnt taking the proper medication and in consultation with Dr. Matsakis, they agreed to go to the nearest hospital to be checked out to make sure he is ok. Asked what this meant as far as his detention by the Bases is concerned, Barns said that once Matsakis is in Cyprus soil, we have no detention rights on him, so it will be up to Dr. Matsakis what the next move is.
