[01] NICOSIA GENERAL HOSPITAL - INAUGURATION

Papadopoulos referred to the government`s commitment to implement in 2008 a General Health Scheme which, as he said, will be flexible and effective, capable to offer medical care to all citizens as well as services at the highest possible standard.

The ceremony was attended by President of the House of Representatives, Archbishop Chrysostomos II, Ministers, government dignitaries, foreign diplomats, MPs and other officials.

After the blessing given by Archbishop Chrisostomos II, President Papadopoulos revealed a marble slate at the entrance of the new Hospital.

President Papadopoulos said the Health Scheme is the second greatest social achievement of the Cypriot people, after the social insurance plan, which will benefit not only the current generation but also future generations.

``When we complete the dialogue with all parties involved, we shall be ready to proceed to the commencement of its implementation in 2008,`` he said.

In his address at the ceremony, Minister of Health Harris Charalambous said the new Nicosia General Hospital is an important project which provides better health service.

Charalambous said that the new Nicosia General Hospital has those prerequisites to render it in the future a regional health centre.

He also said that the new hospital may be called to act as a teaching and education`` hub as part of plans to set up a medical school on the island.
