[01] UN - CYPRUS ISSUEThe United Nations and some of the permanent members of the Security Council appear to be examining arrangements in view of possible developments in the Cyprus problem, after the demolition of the wall in Ledra Street, in the capital Nicosia.According to diplomatic sources from a Security Council member state, after talks with the UN Secretariat, the US State Department and the UK Foreign Office, Britain is ready in April, when it assumes the presidency of the Security Council, to call a meeting on the issue, in order to be briefed on the situation by the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is examining the possibility of inviting Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to New York for talks, without clarifying if these talks would be held separately or if a joint meeting would take place. The climate at UN headquarters is quite optimistic, as the messages sent by Moller from Cyprus to the Secretariat are positive and indicate that the two sides are quite close to a compromise in implementing the 8 July 2006 agreement. Diplomatic sources expect a clearer picture over the next fortnight and it is possible that Ibrahim Gambari, former Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs, would be assigned the Cyprus dossier. The Cyprus problem is also expected to be high up on the agenda of a meeting next week in New York between Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis and the UN chief. [02] BLOMBERG - CYPRUSJaako Blomberg, Special Advisor to the European Commissioner for Enlargement, has been holding talks in Cyprus, focusing on the UN process to resume substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem and trade between the EU and the areas of Cyprus over which the government does not have effective control.CNA sources have said that on Thursday Blomberg, who is accompanied by Director at the Enlargement General Directorate Timo Summa, was received by President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos. The two European officials also had a working lunch with the UN Secretary General`s Special Representative in Cyprus Michael Moller and met with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat and so-called prime minister in the Turkish occupied areas Ferdi Sabit Soyer. [03] CA - STRIKEAround 180 Cyprus Airways airport staff went on a two hour strike this morning in protest against a decision by Eurocypria to hand its customer services over to a private company instead of the state airline. The strike of the members of trade union SYNYKA, SEK started at 0600 local time (0400 GMT) and affected at least three Cyprus Airways flights, two in Paphos and one in Larnaca. Flight CY 382 for Bahrain and Dubai was expected to depart at 0900 and not at 0700 in the morning as scheduled. SYNYKA president Andreas Pierides expressed regret for the inconvenience caused, but added that Eurocyprias actions are creating serious survival problems for Cyprus Airways.
