  • [01] CYPRUS - POLICE - IMMIGRANTS

Flows of illegal immigrants reach the Republic of Cyprus government controlled areas, a development that has been described by the Chief of the Cyprus Police, Charalambos Koulentis, as very serious.

Illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Syria, reach the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, via Turkey, Koulentis said, adding that these people cross over to the Cypriot governments controlled areas from the demarcation line, dividing the government controlled areas with the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus.

We face a huge problem of illegal migration. The major flow of illegal immigrants is taking place through Turkey. Ankara does not cooperate with the Republic of Cyprus on this issue, nor with the international community, the Chief of Police said.

He added that the Cypriot Police are making every effort to stop the flow of illegal immigration and give the right signals to the international community especially the EU.

    [02] CYPRUS - ILLEGAL REGIME

Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said on Tuesday that the government did not oppose efforts to financially strengthen the Turkish Cypriots, which would facilitate the reunification of the island, but opposed any effort to politically upgrade the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic through trade.

Commenting on the adoption by the EU General Affairs Council on Monday of a text regarding trade with the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic of Cyprus, Pashiardis said the text which was included in the conclusions of the General Affairs Council was that which was agreed on 11 December 2006.

    [03] GREECE - CYPRUS - POLICE

The police forces of Cyprus and Greece decided on Tuesday to further strengthen their cooperation in training and the exchange of information, as well as in combatting illegal immigration, organised crime and drug trafficking.

Greek Police chief Anastasios Dimoshakis began his two-day official visit on Tuesday on the island, at the invitation of his Cypriot counterpart Charalambos Koulentis.

Speaking at a press conference after a meeting of the delegations of the two police forces, Koulentis and Dimoshakis praised the high and excellent level of their cooperation and noted that they were working on a programme that would be submitted to the European Commission for further cooperation.
