[01] SPOKESMAN - LEDRAS - BRIDGECypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said Friday that the Turkish Cypriot side should decide whether it would bring down the bridge on Ledras street or not, adding that possibly Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat faces serious problems to implement his declared intention to bring down the bridge.Pashiardis comments came in the wake of press reports that the Turkish Cypriot side was digging a tunnel at Ledras Street, to create a crossing point between the Turkish occupied northern part of Nicosia and the government-controlled areas. Pashiardis said he could not confirm the information that the T/c side is digging a tunnel in the area, noting that the only thing that he could confirm is `the uncertainty as regards the demolition of the bridge.`` Noting that Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat is in Ankara to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul and Turkish Armed Forces Commander Yiasar Buyukanit to discuss almost exclusively the issue of Ledras Street, Pashiardis said ``if the Turkish militaries disagree with the demolition of the bridge I don`t think that there is anyone, including Talat, who believes that the bridge can be brought down.`` The Spokesman also recalled that when Talat had announced his decision to bring down the bridge he pledged that the demolition works would commence the very next day, while the work did not resume due to the Kurban Bayram (a religious feast). ``The Bayram is over and the bridge still stands,`` Pashiardis noted. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory.
