  • [01] HOUSE - STATE BUDGET DEBATE

Parliamentarians begin here Ôuesday a three-day debate on the 2007 state budget.

The budget, as submitted to the House of Representatives, provides for 4.070 billion Cyprus pounds total expenditure and 3.315 billion revenue.

Development expenditure is estimated at 431.6 million pounds for 2007, an increase of 8.4% compared to 2006.

According to the House plenary agenda, the afternoon debate will start with a reading, by the Chairwoman of the House Finance Committee Antigoni Papadopoulou, of a summary of a report of the committee for the state budget.

Following that, parliamentary party leaders (Environmentalists Movement, European Party, EDEK, DIKO, DISY and the Parliamentary spokesman of AKEL party) will take the floor.

The debate on the state budget will wrap up on Thursday evening.

    [02] PROCLAMATION OF MAYORS

The first female mayor of the divided capital Nicosia pledged to work hard with the new municipal council, bearing in mind the needs of the people of the city.

Eleni Mavrou, who secured 34,93% of the vote, said it was a very significant moment for her party, AKEL, the fact that a left wing mayor, a woman, was elected in Nicosia, stressing that this means we are proceeding ahead.

She thanked the leaderships of the parties which backed her, AKEL, the Democratic Party and the Social Democrats Movement, the President of the Republic and the people.

Andreas Christou, former Interior Minister, also backed by the ruling coalition, garnered 55,14% of the votes in Limassol against his rival Eleni Theoharous, who was backed by DISY who secured 44,86 percent.

The message of the day after is a warm greeting to all the citizens of Limassol who voted for me, and all those who did not, because the elections are over, we have a town, its problems which are its sole rivals and we have a united effort to handle them, solve them and improve the lives of our citizens, he said.

He said that with the new Municipal Council and the towns representatives, he will begin a coordinated effort to put forward his programme and proceed as fast as possible without any obstacles.

Former House of Representatives President Alexis Galanos, a veteran politician, was elected Mayor of Famagusta with 55,59% of the vote, ousting the Mayor, Yiannakis Skordis, who secured 44,41%.

Galanos said that he will remain faithful to his promises and will be the mayor of all people of Famagusta, noting that for him there is only one party, Famagusta.

He said he will try with all his strength to serve the people of Famagusta, in a great new effort and priority for the return of the town.

Maria Ioannou Theou, the candidate of the ruling coalition comprising left-wing AKEL, the Democratic Party and the Social Democrats Movement EDEK was proclaimed Mayor of Kyrenia.

In statements, Ioannou said the message is that today we turn a new page in the case of Kyrenia, adding collectively and with all organizations, with a new strong municipal council, we will begin a gigantic campaign both overseas and internal for what is obvious, that is the return of all people of Kyrenia to a free town.

In Larnaca, Andreas Moiseos of the ruling coalition was re-elected Mayor, securing 52.37% of the vote. His rival, Nicos Themistocleous, who was backed by opposition DISY garnered 47.63%.

Speaking after his re-election, Moiseos thanked all those who voted for him, as well as those who did not.

Expressing appreciation for Themistocleous, Moiseos said that now was not the time for rejoicing but rather for contemplation. The town needs more work to become what we want it to be, he pledged.

The coalition candidate Savvas Vergas was elected Mayor of Paphos with 64,59% of the vote, against his rival Panicos Papageorgiou who was backed by DISY and got 26,10%.
