  • [01] BLAIR TURKEY

British Prime Minister Tony Blair expressed hope that the European Council will progress satisfactorily and Turkeys EU accession course will gain the momentum all have been working for.

To a question on Tuesday if he is willing to go to Brussels this week and sign off on the idea that negotiations with Turkey should be suspended in eight key areas, Blair said he supports Turkeys accession to the EU and are working very hard with the Turkish government to achieve this.

He noted that there is an issue to deal with, the Ankara Protocol and so on, but I emphasize that even on the basis of the General Affairs Council decision 27 chapters will be taken forward. And some of those who wanted to see a hold of this process have not been successful in doing that.
