[01] CYPRUS ACTING PRESIDENT - TURKEY - EU
Cyprus supports Turkeys European accession course but it is not
prepared to accept any discount on European principles, for the sake of
avoiding a train crash between Ankara and Brussels, Acting President
and House President Demetris Christofias said.
As long as Turkey does not recognize Cyprus, an EU member, and as long
as it does not open its ports and airports to our ships and aircraft
and normalize relations with us, it cannot expect to have a smooth
course towards membership, he said addressing a seminar of the
association of former parliamentarians in Europe, on Europe, the
Mediterranean and the fight against international terrorism.
[02] WW II VETERANS - CEREMONY
War veterans, survivors of World War II, gathered along with the
political leadership of the island, to pay tribute to some 70 million
people killed during the two world wars last century.
In a solemn ceremony, at the war memorial, they stood in silence to
honour some 600 Cypriot volunteers, who fought in the British regiment
(Cyprus was at the time a British crown colony), and regretted that the
lofty ideas of peace and justice for which they have sacrificed their
lives are not enjoyed to this day by the people of Cyprus, because of
the continuing Turkish occupation of its northern part.
Cyprus paid a heavy price for its participation in World War II, with
about 2,500 soldiers injured and over 600 dead, buried in about 50
cemeteries in 18 countries.
