[01] CRYSOSTOMOS - NEW ARCHBISHOPBishop of Paphos Chrysostomos was elected Sunday Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus with 73 votes.His opponent Limassol Bishop Athanasios received 57 votes. Announcing the result of the third secret ballot, Yiannos Harilaou, in charge of the Church election process, said there was also one invalid ballot. The Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus was elected at the third and final secret ballot among 100 general representatives and 31 ex officio members of the Electoral Assembly. His election was achieved following a pact Chrysostomos made earlier today with Bishop of Kykkou Nikiforos, who was left out of the race on Saturday after the second ballot. The newly elected Archbishop of the Church of Cyprus, Chrysostomos, was born on 10 April 1941, in Tala village, in Paphos district on the west of the island. Having finished elemetary education, he joined the Holy Monastery of Saint Neofytos, in Paphos. He then attended Paphos Gymnasium (secondary school) and graduated in 1963. On November 3, 1963, he was ordained deacon by the then Bishop Trimithountos Georgios. In the next five years, he served as trustee of the Monastery. In 1968 he enrolled in the Theological School of the University of Athens and graduated in 1972. In October 1972, he was unanimously elected Abbot of Saint Neofytos Monastery and in November the same year he was ordained Abbot by the late Archbishop Makarios III.
