[01] PRESIDENT - ELECTION OF NEW ARCHBISHOP
President Tassos Papadopoulos hopes that the new primate of the Church
of Cyprus, to be elected today, will enjoy the widest possible support
and that he will be in a position to lead the Church to better days
ahead. I hope everything runs smoothly in todays electoral process for
a new Archbishop and wish that whoever is elected will enjoy the
broadest support, among the clergy and the people, the President said,
as 131 persons, clergy and laymen, vote in a secret ballot to elect the
head of the Church.
President Papadopoulos wished that the new Archbishop, having the
widest possible support, will be able to help the Church to reach its
rightful place and assist members of the Holy Synod, the Church most
senior body, to regain the prestige they have lost.
The new head of the Church of Cyprus will be elected today by the
Electroral Assembly, comprising 31 ex officio members, such as bishops,
deputy bishops, abbots, monks and nuns, and 100 general
representatives, representing the candidates for the post of the
Primate of the Church. The name of the new Archbishop, to be elected
among the three hopefuls Paphos bishop Chrysostomos and Limassol bishop
Athanasios and Abbot of Kykko Monastery Nikiforos, is expected to be
announced in the afternoon.
The first ballot has not given the majority to any of the candidates so
a second ballot is underway at present.
