  • [01] MARIOS KAROYIAN - NEW DIKO LEADER

New Democratic Party (DIKO) leader Marios Karoyian said the vote of DIKO members is a strong mandate, towards himself and the partys leadership, stressing that the mandate is clear, the party should proceed collectively in the new era.

Speaking to his elated supporters outside the DIKO headquarters in Nicosia, following his victory against Acting President Nicos Cleanthous, Karoyian pledged to continue supporting the government of former DIKO leader and current President of the Republic Tassos Papadopoulos.

Karoyian was elected as the third President of the centre-right Democratic Party, succeeding Papadopoulos who resigned from the post in August this year.

Karoyian secured 4,759 votes or 62.6% against 2,840 votes or 37.4% garnered by Cleanthous.

In his statements, Karoyian expressed his most sincere appreciation for the vote of confidence given by the members of DIKO to his proposal to proceed ahead in the new era, with vision a stronger Democratic Party.

Todays vote of the people of DIKO, is a strong mandate, towards myself and towards everyone of us in the DIKO leadership. The mandate is clear; that we should proceed collectively, opening new roads in DIKO, in Cyprus and our people, the new party leader said.

Today, democracy is the winner. There are no winners or losers. Everyone today voted for the Democratic Party, he added.

Karoyian said that from tomorrow, with Cleanthous and the rest of the DIKO leadership at the central and district party committees, with all our strength united, we begin a new era. We all have a heavy debt and a heavy political legacy. We cannot afford to leave this debt unpaid. We owe a lot to our honoured party. We owe a lot to the late founder of our party, Spyros Kyprianou. We owe a lot to Tassos Papadopoulos. We owe a lot to our country and all those who have been here and who will succeed us, he remarked.

Karoyian said that the Democratic Party will continue supporting President Papadopoulos and his government, and as the fundamental pylon of the current governmen coalition, will give a new impetus in implementing the government programme.

We will continue to strengthen and reinforce this cooperation with mutual respect and appreciation with the parties of the coalition, he added, and pledged that we will respond to the new challenges in a constructive manner as well as the order of todays times and history as well as the needs of todays world.

Karoyian said he had a telephone communication with the President of the Republic and that later this evening, he intended to contact the leaders of the parties which participate in the government.

He also thanked and congratulated party officials and members who worked during the elections, describing their effort as excellent and praising their professionalism

On his part, Cleanthous congratulated Karoyian, wished him every success and said he will remain a simple soldier in the DIKO party.

To his supporters, he said he acknowledges their disappointment.

However, Cleanthous stressed that the times are critical and called on all members to remain united. At the same time Cleanthous stressed that he will have a watchful eye not to lose the upward trend which with so many sacrifices and struggles we have achieved.
