  • [01] VANHANEN PROPOSAL CYPRUS

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen, whose country currently holds the rotating EU Presidency said his country is actively working for Cyprus to find a solution before December.

Responding to a question during a press conference, at the end of the EU Informal European Council, Vanhanen was asked to comment on the Cyprus problem in relation to the Finnish proposals on the issue.

``I can only tell you that the Finnish Presidency, we have been very active on this issue. We are negotiating with all parties and we are working actively and our aim is to find a solution before December``, he said.

    [02] MOLLER SPEECH

United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General Michael Moller called on Cypriots to keep open the current window of opportunity for a Cyprus settlement open.

He also expressed the UNs concern about recent negative discussions on past UN funding of bi-communal activities.

In a UN Day address to some 200 invited guests at UNFICYP`s Sector 2 Ledra Palace headquarters in Nicosia, Moller warned of the risk that this could undermine the commitment and willingness of Cypriots from both communities to strengthen relationships and bi-communal cooperation in Cyprus.

These developments run counter to ongoing efforts to promote cooperation and trust between the two communities, which are a prerequisite for reaching a sustainable solution in Cyprus, he said. ``They risk poisoning the very atmosphere within which we hope a new process can thrive``, he noted.

    [03] HOLY SYNOD ELECTIONS

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus ratified the election of the 100 General Representatives who, together with the ex officio members, will elect the new Archbishop next month.

The announcement was made by Acting Primate of the Church of Cyprus, Bishop of Paphos Chrysostomos, who said the election will take place on 4 November.

During the last phase of the election process an Electoral Assembly will be set up, comprising ex officio members, such as bishops, deputy bishops, abbots and monks, and the 100 general representatives.

The Assembly will be called to the Archbishopric to elect the Archbishop by secret ballot in two separate ballot boxes, one for each of the two groups that makes up the Assembly, namely ex officio and general representatives.
