The European Commission adopted on Thursday the second quarterly update of the Community list of airlines banned in the EU, and although it did not consider that an immediate banning measure was called for in the case of Ajet, former Helios Airways, certified in Cyprus, it will be keeping a watchful eye on the company.

The new list replaces the previous one, which was drawn up in March 2006 and already amended in June.

``On top of the changes to the black list we are going to keep a closer watch on a number of carriers operating frequent passenger flights in Europe,`` Commission Vice-President in charge of transport Jacques Barrot said.

    [02] SPOKESMAN - TURKEY - EU

Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said on Thursday that the government`s aim was and remains that by November 8, when the European Commission`s progress report on Turkey is to be tabled, none of the 34 remaining chapters in Turkey`s EU accession negotiations would be opened.

Asked if Cyprus would block the chapter on Industry, Pashiardis said it would not be taken to Thursday`s COREPER meeting, after an intervention by the delegations of Greece and Cyprus.
