  • [01] CYPRIOT PRESIDENT TURKEY

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos said that Cyprus extended its support to Turkey`s EU accession course in the genuine hope that it would show its European colours and credentials and provide also an incentive for Turkey to cooperate in a Cyprus settlement based on EU values and principles, but pointed out that regrettably Turkey has maintained a policy of confrontation by refusing to meet its obligations undertaken towards the EU, including Cyprus.

In remarks at the state banquet in honour of Irish President Mary McAleese, President Papadopoulos said the suspension of Turkey`s European prospects would undoubtedly be an adverse development but noted that however adverse and undesirable this possibility, of greater consequence and with far-reaching implications would be if Turkey would be given the message that it can continue its accession process unhindered, without meeting its obligations.

He also reassured that he remains committed to a solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of a functional bizonal, bicommunal federation, which would guarantee that Cyprus is able to meet its obligations towards the EU, and focuses solely on the interests of the Cypriot people.

[02] HOLY SYNOD - ARCHBISHOPRIC ELECTIONS

The Holy Synod, the Church of Cyprus most senior institution, ratified the results of the 24th September election process for a new Archbishop after an all day session where objections to the election of the special representatives were dismissed.

The announcement was made by Acting Primate of the Church of Cyprus, Bishop of Pafos Chrysostomos who said the next phase in the process to elect a new primate will be on 15 October when the 1,400 Special Representatives elected will vote for 100 General Representatives.

The Acting Primate said the members of the Holy Synod heard a number of witnesses who testified on the objections raised on the election process as well as the counting of the votes. He remarked that the civil servants who were assigned to help in counting the votes said the elections were held in an excellent manner. The objections were thus dismissed and the church elections were ratified after three members voted in favour, two against and one abstained.
