[01] PAPADOPOULOS - DIKOPresident of the Republic of Cyprus Tassos Papadopoulos, who has decided to depart from the post of President of the Democratic Party (DIKO), told an extraordinary party congress on Saturday that it was imperative to maintain unity in the party and continue cooperation with the parties participating in the government.Addressing the congress, which also heard speeches by the two candidates to succeed him in the leadership of the party, Nicos Kleanthous and Marios Karoyian, President Papadopoulos assured he would have no involvement in procedures to elect a new party President. President Papadopoulos explained the reasons for his departure from the presidency of DIKO, mainly that his duties as President of the Republic did not allow him to fully respond to his duties as DIKO President, noting that "I will always be with you, close to you, an active member in the party." He assured that he would continue to strive for a just settlement of the Cyprus problem, noting that the Greek Cypriot community had rejected a UN sponsored plan in a referendum in 2004, and called on everyone to consider if things would have been better had the plan have been accepted. "Just think that 24 hours after the referendum, as the plan provided for, the Republic of Cyprus would have been dissolved and at the same time we would be waiting for Turkey to fulfill the obligations it was undertaking with the plan," he said, pointing out that two years later Turkey was still not meeting its obligations towards the EU.
