  • [01] SPOKESMAN - TURKEY - EU

The Cypriot government will not accept any formula which will exclude the return of Varosha and also link the regulation for direct trade with the Turkish occupied north and Turkeys EU accession course, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis has said.

He added that the safest way to avoid a crisis is for Ankara to implement its obligations.

Replying to questions during the daily press briefing, Pashiardis said that we anticipate and believe that the Commissions progress report on Turkey which will be submitted, will be specific and objective.

Answering questions on the draft EU progress report, the Spokesman replied that the government does not have anything before it. However he said the Commission already has the positions and suggestions of the Cypriot government which it believes should be included in the final report, noting the events which occurred should not be disregarded or evaded.

He referred to an intense and systematic effort to find a compromising formula which would exclude a crisis in the Euro-Turkish relations, noting that the safest way to avoid such crisis is for Turkey to fully conform with its European obligations and to fulfill the obligations it has undertaken.

    [02] HELIOS - TSOLAKIS REPORT

The Commission of Inquiry into the causes of the Helios air crash suspended its hearings here Monday in view of the publication of the final report on the causes of the crash.

The announcement was made here by Panagiotis Kallis who chairs the commission, noting that the first round of witnesses, who were invited to testify, was completed.

He also said that the Commission will continue with the second round of testimonies once it examines the report of the Greek Air Accident and Incidents Investigating Committee which is chaired by Akrivos Tsolakis. The report is expected to be made public this week.
