  • [01] CYPRUS PRESIDENT - CREDENTIALS - CYPRUS QUESTION

Cyprus` EU membership will further promote relations with the countries of South East Asia, pledged here Friday President Tassos Papadopoulos.

Receiving at a formal ceremony at the Presidential Palace the credentials of the new Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to the Republic of Cyprus, stationed in Athens, Rigoberto D. Tiglao, President Papadopoulos also assured that Cyprus remains firmly committed to further strengthening its cooperation in both the bilateral and the multilateral fields.

Presenting his credentials, Tiglao said diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Cyprus have been friendly and cordial since the establishment of diplomatic relations on 6 March 1980. ``Our bilateral relations continued to grow and improve through the years, shaped by our peoples` common affinity to democratic values which prevailed through our countries` history and development as republics,`` he remarked.

Tiglao extended his government`s appreciation ``for the trust and confidence accorded to our Filipino workers in Cyprus.``

Replying the President of the Republic said Cyprus and the Philippines have enjoyed excellent relations since the official establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1980. ``Our bonds of friendship are strengthened by the presence of a significant number of Filipino employees in Cyprus, including the Filipino seafarers, who contribute to the steady development of our shipping industry,`` he noted.

[02] CYPRUS FM - EU PRESIDENCY - TURKEY - CYPRUS

Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas has said it is possible to avoid a crisis on the relations between Turkey and the EU, through the proposal of the EU Finnish Presidency to which the Cyprus government has expressed its views on the context of the proposal.

He also said that Turkey`s accession course is not connected to the settlement of the Cyprus issue and that there is no intention on the part of the EU to be involved in an ``oriental bazaar`` with Turkey on how the acquis communautaire must be implemented or respected.

In statements upon his return from Germany and Romania, Lillikas said there is great interest from many EU countries about the initiative of the Finnish Presidency and pointed out that ``contacts and deliberations are been held with the Turkish government`` from Finland and other partners, as well as from other countries which are not EU members.

[03] HELIOS AIR CRASH - COMMISSION OF INQUIRY

Former Head of Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation DCA) Flight Operation Division Stelios Andronikou claimed today that those responsible for the administration of the Department did not give all the support they should to employees, to complete their training within a short period of time.

Testifying today before the Commission of Inquiry into the causes of the air crash in August 2005 near Athens, killing all 121 passengers and crew on board, Andronikou said that from the day that he assumed his duties at the DCA he had repeatedly suggested that trainings should take place both for him and other members of the staff, something which happened ``much later and after many efforts on our part.``
