  • [01] OLYMPIC HOUSE - INAUGURATION

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and International Olympic Committee (IOC) Jacques Rogge inaugurated the Cypriot Olympic House, considered as a major project for sports in Cyprus and an important landmark in the activities of the Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC).

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, President Papadopoulos said that the Cypriot government supports and will continue to support Olympics and sports on the island, not just with words but also with specific projects.

"The government substantially contributed to the construction of the Olympic House which is inaugurated today," the President said, adding that it constitutes "yet another proof of practical government interest and government contribution in further promoting and developing sports and the Olympics in Cyprus."

In his address, Rogge described the building as magnificent, adding that ``sports deserve this building, for sport has a great role in society, sport indeed is much more than just competition, sport is about education, sport is about social cohesion.``

``Today I must say that in terms of headquarters you are playing in the senior league and I do not know many examples as this one in the 203 national Olympic committees of the world,`` the IOC President added.

COC President Kikis Lazarides said that this day is historic because a dream comes true.

``Our aim is to create these new preconditions which will upgrade our sports, will contribute to the wider spreading of the Olympic ideals within the Cypriot society and especially among the youth,`` Lazarides said.

Located at the entrance of Nicosia, the Olympic House, a pierced metal construction which cost around 5.5 million Cyprus pounds, will, inter alia, shelter the 35 sport Federations, members of the COC and will feature a multiple-purpose hall, meeting rooms and will present sport and other exhibits.
