Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyiannis said today that there was "optimism that the discussions in Cyprus would move forward."

Bakoyiannis was speaking after a 25-minute meeting in New York with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

Diplomatic sources said there was speculation that after the discussions held over the recent period between the representatives of the leaders of the two communities in Cyprus on procedural issues, the talks could move on to day-to-day and substantive matters.

The same sources said the UN agree with the opinion that so far Ankara has obstructed Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat from making any constructive moves, and that in view of Turkey`s EU course forthcoming developments, the Turkish government seems to be holding back from blocking the process further.
