[01] AIR CRASH - HEARINGSThe Commission of Inquiry into the causes of the 14 August 2005 Helios air crash, that killed all 121 people on board, continued its hearings today, with the testimonies of two employees of the Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation (DCA), who said that the DCA sticks to the deadlines it sets for air companies to solve any problems the Department finds in its regular checks, especially when these findings concern air safety.Christos Joachim, employed at the DCA Flight Operation Unit, said that after every in depth audit at the air companies, the inspectors make a follow up check one and a half months later, to ensure that the companies have solved the problems. Kallis presented today two reports, one dated 26 July 2004 and one that was drafted eight months later, in March 2005. The July report asked Helios air company to restore, within set timeframes, a series of findings detected during an inspection by the DCA at the company`s air operation unit. The DCA`s report of the following March referred to those findings, noting that no further action was needed. The second witness, Charalambos Demetriou, an employee in the DCA Air License Unit, said that a 2002 law providing that the Unit is responsible for the issuing of licenses for air mechanics, never came into force.
