  • [01] HELIOS - AIR CRASH - COMMISSION OF INQUIRY

Serious omissions at the Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) did not allow to have a satisfactory control of the air companies, said former head of DCA Licensing Division Charalambos Hadjigeorgiou, during his third appearance before the Commission of Inquiry into the cause of the Helios Boeing 737-300 air crash on August 14, 2005, near Athens, that killed all 121 passengers on board.

Hadjigeorgiou, who was cross examined today by the Helios Airways attorney Demetris Araouzos, said that the aircraft that crashed had received in 2004 an airworthiness certificate by the DCA although the company had not solved eight safety-related problems, as recommended by a DCA British counselor.
