  • [01] FM - SECURITY COUNCIL - CYPRUS QUESTION

The Cypriot government hopes and expects that the UN Security Council, that will be briefed later today by UN Undersecretary-General for political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari on Cyprus, will express its support to the efforts for the preparation of talks on the Cyprus question and the implementation of the July 8 agreement between the two sides on the island, Foreign Minister George Lillikas has said.

In statements Lillikas said that that Gambari has already briefed the Security Council`s five permanent member-states and he will brief today the Security Council.

On July 8 Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos met Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in the presence of Gambari. The two leaders agreed the commencement of meetings between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots on a technical level on issues that affect the day to day life of people and concurrently on issues that concern substantive issues.

[02] JOURNALISTS - TURKISH OCCUPIED AREAS - BOYCOTT

Greek Cypriot media decided that as of today and for the next two weeks days no journalist or cameraman will cross to the Turkish occupied areas of the island to cover any activity or event concerning the occupation regime, after a spate of illegal arrests of Greek Cypriot reporters in the pseudostate in recent weeks.

A meeting of representatives of the Union of Cyprus Journalists UCJ), of the newspapers and magazines publishers union, the cameramen trade union, trade unions of Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation employees and TV channels also decided to demand that the UN, the European Union and international and European organisations, safeguarding the freedom of the press and the individual rights, act decisively for the termination of the arbitrary stance of the occupation regime and the effective protection of the journalists` mission, work and rights.

This demand will be conveyed to the UN Secretary-General`s Special Representative to Cyprus, to the Head of the European Commission Representation to Cyprus and to the Ambassadors of the UN Security Council permanent member states in Nicosia.

[03] "HELIOS" - AIR CRASH - COMMISSION OF INQUIRY

No flight inspections were carried out to aircrafts of Cypriot airlines for a period of eight months before the ``Helios`` air crash near Athens, in August 14, 2005, that killed all 121 people on board, former head of Cypriot Civil Aviation Licensing Division Charalambos Hadjigeorgiou has said.

Hadjigeorgiou, who testified Tuesday before the Commission of Inquiry into the cause of the air crash, said that the gaps and omissions in the Department had ``serious impacts`` on flight safety in Cyprus.

``For a period of eight months before the tragedy took place no flight inspection was carried out in any Cypriot aircraft, since the competent British Inspector was not substituted,`` he said.
