  • [01] CYPRUS - TALAT - F1 - PROTEST

The Cyprus government will protest ``the unacceptable and provocative theatrical performance organized by Ankara with Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat`` as the leading actor during the Grand Prix in Turkey and will call on the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to react to this kind of behaviour, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes has said.

Meanwhile Cyprus Automobile Association has sent a letter to FIA denouncing the presence of Talat during the prize giving ceremony when he was announced as the president of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, a regime in Cyprus occupied areas which the UN has declared ``legally invalid.``

Talat presented Sunday the first prize to Formula 1 winner in Constantinople (Istanbul) and was addressed during the ceremony as president`` of the Turkish Cypriot regime.

UN resolution 541, issued after the unilateral declaration in November 1983 of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by Rauf Denktash, who was then leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, deplored the declaration, considered it as legally invalid and called for its withdrawal.

    [02] SPOKESMAN - JOURNALISTS - ABDUCTION

The Cyprus government has described the abduction of two Greek Cypriot journalists by the Turkish Cypriot occupation forces as an illegal and provocative act, which, it said, shows once again the authoritarian face of the regime.

Furthermore, the government said that such behaviour reveals the restrictive and arbitrary mentality of the regime, of which Greek Cypriot journalists have repeatedly fallen victims.

Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes said that the government and other organised groups have made representations which have not convinced the abductors to free Adonis Pallikarides, journalist at Cyprus TV station Sigma and cameraman Nikitas Dalitis working at the same TV station.

    [03] CYPRUS - EU - TURKEY

The Republic of Cyprus supports Turkey`s European prospects but is not willing to undertake the cost for its European course, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis has said.

He also made clear that ``we are not discussing at this time any alternative methods and scenarios as to what will happen or must happen in case Turkey continues not to comply with its European obligations`` and that the only thing which concerns and interests the government at this moment is for Turkey to fulfill the obligations and engagements it undertook towards the Republic of Cyprus as well.

Invited to comment on information about a package of ideas prepared by the Americans to prevent an EU-Turkey crisis, in view of the progress report for Turkey to be issued by the European Commission, the Spokesman said that ``the Cypriot government has not been informed about any process or any ideas by the American side and therefore it is not possible to comment on an issue which it is not aware of.``

    [04] CYPRUS - VODAFONE - TELSIM

The Cypriot government will express its opinion as regards the cooperation between British Vodafone and the regime in Cyprus` Turkish occupied areas as soon as it has the full text of the agreement, Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis has said.

Turkish Telsim, which has an affiliated company in the occupied areas of Cyprus, has been bought by British Vodafone, which also has a trade agreement with the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (CYTA).

Replying to a question, the Spokesman said ``this is a serious issue,`` adding that ``the Cypriot government is following it with the necessary attention.``
