Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs George Lillikas said that the conclusions adopted by the EU General Affairs Council, which convened on Friday to discuss the creation of a peacekeeping force to be deployed in Lebanon, contains positions that satisfy the Republic of Cyprus.

In statements to CNA, Lillikas pointed out the inclusion in the conclusions of an appeal to Israel to lift the blockade on Lebanon`s ports and airports.

Lillikas added that Cyprus supported at the Council that the Middle East issue should be put back on the agenda because only a comprehensive solution of the Palestinian question will bring peace to the region.

The Minister noted Cyprus supported that Israel`s operations in the Gaza Strip must cease in order to create the appropriate circumstances that would allow a return to the road map.

He said many countries viewed Cyprus` position positively, which increases the possibilities of it being discussed at the Informal Council in Gymnich in early September.

Regarding the deployment of the peacekeeping force in Lebanon, Lillikas said the majority of EU member states said they would participate in UNIFIL, noting that some would be participating with troops and others with the provision of technical support.
