    Cypriot Foreign Minister George Lillikas departs next Thursday, 24 August, for Beirut at the invitation of Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, for consultations with the Lebanese government, Deputy Minister to the President and Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardes has announced.

    Pashiardes also said that the Foreign Minister has sent a letter to his Finnish counterpart Erkki Tuomioja, whose country holds this semester`s EU Presidency, as well as to the EU High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, in which he states that ``Cyprus places at the disposal of the EU and the UN its infrastructure for the transfer of humanitarian aid to Lebanon, as well as members and equipment of the UN Peacekeeping Force in the area.

    Moreover, the Republic of Cyprus offers to send two officers of its National Guard to Lebanon, to participate in the UN Peacekeeping Force, in accordance with the recent UN Security Council resolution, the Spokesman added.

    Pashiardes said that the United Nations Secretariat has already been informed about Cyprus contribution as a transit station, as well as its willingness to participate in the Peacekeeping Force.

    He added that so far there has been no official response from either the EU or the UN, noting that there is surely no serious reason for a negative response.

    I believe that the EU will respond positively towards Cyprus offer, he concluded.

    [02] CYPRUS - UN RESOLUTION - LEBANON

    The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus has described UN Security Council resolution 1701 ``a positive step towards peace and stability in the Middle East.`` It also expressed satisfaction with the unanimous adoption of the resolution and welcomed its approval by the governments of Lebanon and Israel.

    ``The resolution, which calls for the comprehensive solution of a conflict which has cost the lives of hundreds of innocent people, constitutes a positive step towards peace and stability in the Middle East,`` an official press release has said.

    The Ministry calls on the governments of Lebanon and Israel to take all necessary steps for the full and effective implementation of resolution 1701. Cyprus has made available all its infrastructure for the purpose of the distribution of humanitarian aid to Lebanon. The Ministry reiterates its commitment to contribute to the achievement of peace in Lebanon and its willingness to assist the government of Lebanon to face the problems created by the conflict.
