  • [01] SPOKESMAN - LEADERS - MEETING

Cypriot Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said that a date has not been set for a meeting between President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat to review work done so far on a technical level in efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, adding that it was not important how the meeting was requested but that the meeting took place.

Pashiardis noted that by the time the meeting is arranged there will be a catalogue of issues to be discussed on the technical level, which will include all issues on the lists the two sides have already submitted.

The Spokesman said that in the proposal for a meeting of the leaders of the two communities it was suggested that the meeting took place after August 10.

He noted the Greek Cypriot side`s contribution could be considered "given and certain."

Asked about the final list of issues, Pashiardis said "it does not have to be agreed on" and that "all the issues included in this catalogue will be up for discussion."

Pashiardis did not elaborate, noting that "it is our commitment not to make public, talk about or comment on anything concerning the meetings of the representatives of the two leaders."

He added however that the implementation of all which has been agreed "is not exclusively up to us, but depends on the other side as well."

    [02] DEFENCE MINISTER - LEBANON

Cyprus Minister of Defense Phivos Klokkaris has said that the National Guard is at a high level of readiness and always takes all appropriate measures regarding the embattled situation in Lebanon, adding that ``the crisis in our neighborhood obviously concerns us``.

In statements made in Larnaca, Klokkaris said the National Guard ``has been involved in the overall effort by various countries and Cyprus, to provide humanitarian aid to foreign nationals fleeing Lebanon``.

He also said the National Guard and the Ministry of Defense enjoy ``close cooperation with the military forces of those countries which provided aircraft and naval means to carry out this humanitarian operation``.

    [03] CYPRUS - LEBANON - PEACE FORCE

Government Spokesman Christodoulos Pashiardis said that the Republic of Cyprus would decide whether or not it would participate in a peacekeeping force for Lebanon if and when the UN decides to establish such a force and calls on Cyprus to contribute.

To a comment that Turkey has expressed its willingness to lead this peacekeeping force, Pashiardis said Turkey had been invited to the Rome meeting on the Middle East.

``I do not know the exact reasons for which Turkey was invited and participated in this meeting, nor of course do I know the reasons why some people want the involvement of Turkey in efforts to solve the escalating crisis in Lebanon and peace in the region. I can only assume that the sole serious reason is Turkey`s unquestionable and recognised specialisation in issues of invasion, victimisation of refugees and ways of creating refugees,`` he said.

    [04] US - CYPRUS - CIVIL DEFENCE

The US government has donated humanitarian aid material, which had reached Cyprus in the past few weeks to relieve the US citizens who fled war-torn Lebanon and found temporarily shelter in Cyprus.

The material was donated to the Cypriot Civil Defence to strengthen the Force in case there is a new wave of refugees from Lebanon.

The humanitarian aid consists of around 7.000 sheets, 6.600 towels, 4.500 pillows, 1.900 cots, shower facilities, 36.000 ready meals, medical goods and comfort kits.
