  • [01] MAKARIOS - MEMORIALS

Memorial services were held in all churches across the government controlled areas of the Republic for Cyprus` first President, Archbishop Makarios III, who died on August 3, 1977.

The official memorial was held at Kykkos Monastery, in the presence of President Tassos Papadopoulos and other officials.

Speaking at the memorial, Honourary President of the Social Democrats Movement EDEK Vassos Lyssarides referred to the struggles of Makarios III until the end of his life for Cyprus and its future, as well as current efforts to solve the Cyprus problem.

He pointed out the need for a solution of the Cyprus problem based on international and European law, and deplored international efforts to undermine the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus with the simultaneous upgrading of the puppet regime in the Turkish occupied areas of the Republic.

Referring to Turkey`s EU course, Lyssarides pointed out that Ankara is refusing to meet its obligations as a candidate country.

After the memorial, a sanctum was held at the tomb of Makarios III at Throni, followed by the laying of wreaths.

[02] FINANCE MINISTER - EVACUEES COST

Cypriot Minister of Finance Michalis Sarris said the Republic of Cyprus is paying up to 100,000 pounds on a daily basis on overtime, means of transport and other expenses to serve the foreign citizens evacuating Lebanon, adding however that Cyprus can cope with this cost.

Speaking at Larnaca Port, where he visited the areas foreign citizens occupy on arrival from Lebanon, Sarris said he wanted to see "the effort Cyprus has made to help out in the tragedy that has hit Lebanon."

Asked how much it cost the Republic to host the evacuees, he said it was "80,000 to 100,000 pounds a day in overtime, means of transport and other expenses," adding that "the amounts so far are such that we can cope without any great problems."

"Europe has already decided to allocate to Cyprus an amount of around 3.5 million pounds, about 7 million euros, in the context of a broader aid to those taking part in these initiatives," Sarris pointed out, adding that volunteer work has cut down the state`s expenses.
