  • [01] LARNACA - DEMONSTRATION

Cypriots expressed on Wednesday their solidarity with the Lebanese people under strain due to the 12-day bombing by the Israeli air force, and called for an end to hostilities.

The Cypriot Peace Council, left-wing AKEL and the popular movement of Larnaca and Famagusta staged in Larnaca a demonstration to express their solidarity with the Lebanese people, condemning at the same time the Israeli offensive. People gathered outside of Larnaca Port, where dozens of ships come and go, transferring evacuees from war-ravaged Lebanon, and then marched to Larnaca`s main sea front road.

Speaking at the demonstration, AKEL General Secretary Demetris Christofias said that the reasons behind Israel`s offensive in Lebanon is its disengagement from the agreements providing for an independent Palestinian state and the implementation of US plans for a full imposition on the Middle East.

The participants in the demonstration approved a resolution expressing their unreserved solidarity with ``the peoples of Palestine and Lebanon, who are victims of Israel`s criminal policy.``

[02] INTERIOR MINISTER - LEBANON EVACUEES

Cyprus is calling for a ceasefire in Lebanon and is bracing itself to tackle a possible influx of Lebanese fleeing their country, a situation which would be averted if an end was put to hostilities.

``The possible influx of Lebanese citizens to Cyprus will depend on the continuation of hostilities or not and from the presence of the necessary humanitarian help to support the population,`` Cypriot Minister of the Interior Andreas Christou said, adding that ``we are taking the necessary measures and making preparations to face such an eventuality.``

Christou reiterated that Cyprus does not have the capacity to accommodate thousands of refugees fleeing Lebanon. ``We have stated to the representatives of the EU that Cyprus does not have the infrastructure for a long accommodation of refugees,`` he said.

    [03] CYPRIOT MP - BEIRUT

The Lebanese government and all Lebanese parties look forward to a more active involvement of the European Union in efforts to secure an end to the hostilities in Lebanon, Cypriot left-wing AKEL party MP Dinos Hadjinicola told CNA, adding that after 12 days of Israeli air raids the people in Beirut ``fear that the worst is yet to come.``

Hadjinicola is participating in the European Parliament`s Confederal Group of the European United Left - Nordic Green Left delegation visiting battered Beirut.
