A total of 18 flights took off from Larnaca International Airport yesterday carrying 2.500 evacuees from Lebanon, and a further four flights were expected to take place for European destinations, carrying a further one thousand people.

The statement was made by Civil Aviation Department Director Leonidas Leonidou who said that a total of 703 passengers were flown to their countries via Paphos International Airport from war-torn Lebanon and a further five flights would take place by midnight.

There were also six flights out of Paphos airport carrying US nationals fleeing Lebanon, while today and Sunday a further 4.000-6.000 Americans will arrive on the island on board ships expected during the weekend at Limassol Port.

Leonidou also said that the military airbase Andreas Papandreou is being used in the evacuation process by French military aircraft to carry French nationals.

He also said around 600 Indian nationals left Larnaca airport on Friday on board two Boeing Indian aircrafts.

Leonidou said all necessary measures are taken at all airports to ensure the safety of all people.

Ships ferrying more foreign nationals were expected on Friday night and into the early hours Saturday at Larnaca and Limassol ports.

US Ambassador in Nicosia, Ronald Schlicher, who visited Paphos airport said so far 5.700 Americans have been transported via Cyprus.

He said this was another indicator of the remarkable cooperation, not just with the US but with all of the countries in the world that are affected by the situation in Lebanon, the remarkable cooperation the Cypriot government has extended to the whole world.

In another development, pharmaceutical assistance provided by the Republic of Cyprus was transported to Lebanon from Larnaca port on a Greek vessel.
