The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is making efforts to repatriate some 70 Cypriot citizens currently in Lebanon.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Ambassador Sotos Zackheos told CNA that about 70 Cypriots have contact either the Embassy of the Republic in Beirut or the crisis department at the Ministry, expressing their wish to return to Cyprus.

Zackheos explained that the Cypriot government offered to also transport European citizens currently in Lebanon, who wish to depart from the country due to the unsettled situation there.

Furthermore, President of the Cyprus Airways Board of Directors Lazaros Savvides told CNA that "our arrangements, made in close cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are that we are planning a flight tonight to Damascus to bring the persons who the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been informed are in Lebanon and wish to return to Cyprus via Damascus."

Savvides noted that the flight will be made when all the necessary arrangements are in place and the relevant approvals have been given.

He added that even though Cyprus Airways had a scheduled flight to Damascus tomorrow, "they intend to carry out a special flight, in replacement of the flight we were scheduled to carry out to Lebanon tonight, to bring back all those persons who are in Lebanon and wish to return to Cyprus."

Replying to questions, Savvides said these persons are in contact with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will be informed about the arrangements by the Cyprus Airways office in Lebanon and the Embassy.
