  • [01] UN - PAPADOPOULOS-TALAT AGREEMENT

UN Deputy Spokeswoman Marie Okabie referred to the agreement reached on Saturday on bicommunal discussions during a meeting between Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat in the presence of UN Undersecretary General for political affairs Ibrahim Gambari.

Okabie said that following the encounter the two leaders committed to proceed by the end of July with technical talks on issues affecting the day-to-day life of people on both sides and they also agreed on broader principles concerning the need to seek a comprehensive settlement.

[02] EU - PAPADOPOULOS TALAT AGREEMENT

EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn has said that an agreement reached Saturday between Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat was an ``encouraging signal`` towards reaching a comprehensive Cyprus settlement under UN auspices.

Welcoming the ``positive outcome`` of the mission of UN Undersecretary General for political affairs Ibrahim Gambari to Cyprus, he reiterated Commission`s full commitment to supporting the resumption of talks as soon as possible.``

``The fact that the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities, Tassos Papadopoulos and Mehmet Ali Talat, met three times in one week is an encouraging signal that dialogue has a chance on the island and that there is a perspective of re-launching a new process towards reaching a comprehensive settlement under UN auspices,`` he noted.

    [03] PAPADOPOULOS - KAKOYIANNIS - DECORATION

Cypriot President Tassos Papadopoulos decorated Cypriot director Michalis Kakoyiannis with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III for his services to Cyprus and his invaluable contribution to contemporary Greek culture.

Speaking at the ceremony, which took place in Athens, President Papadopoulos said Michalis Kakoyiannis did not choose the easy role of a spectator before the continuing ordeal of Cypriot Hellenism but has made ``Cyprus` tragedy a personal case, not only because Cyprus is his birthplace, but because every Hellene who respects himself and his history has a duty to feel and regard Cyprus as a matter concerning him directly and personally.``

President Papadopoulos referred to the work of Michalis Kakoyiannis ``Attila `74``, noting that it is not a regular film but ``a gripping challenge of collective national conscience, a substantive historical attestation of the crimes of the coup and the barbaric Turkish invasion.``
